News From Suzanne Reid

Hello Friends,

I hope you and your family and friends are doing okay through all of the illnesses going around and I hope you are taking good care of yourself.

On March 11th I made my last trip to the Durham Real Estate Investment Club meeting before social isolation and learned from Cherry Chan some fantastic tips on how to keep records organized for tax time. Cherry Chan is a successful real estate investor, CPA, CA and knows how to keep track of property numbers! There are so many apps and different types of software that speak to each other so you can send your numbers already organized to your accountant. Cool stuff!

I had a dinner and Cashflow game organized at my place in Kingston for up to eighteen real estate investors that was postponed due to COVID-19 until further notice. In the meantime, a new game to add to our old version came in the mail, so my son Kaleb and I have been having fun on our own with it spending quality time together.

Social distancing forced me to learn about my HVAC system because I didn`t know whether my downstairs tenants would be a risk to us if they are still using public transit. My HVAC guy was so helpful and we are now on texting terms. I will definitely be giving him more business from other properties!

Grampa playing with Child and Washroom sign with “It Was Never A Dress”). Dads/Grandpa`s and Moms/Grandmas with kids home from school, this is for all of your efforts. You are appreciated. Sending my Love to you all!

It’s a good time of year to plant a garden if you want to avoid grocery stores. Take any root veggies you have and cut the new growth off in chunks like this. (If you only have new ones, put some aside to wait for them to sprout). Place them in water and watch them grow. Give them soil and a little more sun every day until they have a full day of sun. You can grow them in a garden or in deep containers!

Cheers,

Investing in the time of COVID-19

COVID-19 has changed life as we know it. It’s still hard to fathom exactly what’s going on, both with the markets, which fell by about 6% in Canada and 8% in the U.S., and in life. My kids are now home all of the time, FaceTime cocktails are now a thing (and more fun than I had expected), and date night consists of a quick trip to the grocery store. Romance in Aisle 1?

I’ve also had a lot of talks with friends about the economy and the markets. They tell me their portfolio is down a ton, I say mine is too, though I don’t know by how much because I’m not checking. I know they’re down by 30%, but I don’t need to obsess over the specifics. I’m not selling because, what’s the point? My portfolio has already fallen and you only lose that money if you liquidate. I still have at least a couple decades to go before I need those savings, and my hope is that the markets, like they always have, rise at some point before then.
