News From Suzanne Reid

Hello friends,

I am hoping you are having a great start in your March so far. Surprising fact about the month of March. March isn’t just about celebrating St. Patrick’s Day and the start of spring. The sun shines on the equator for the Vernal Equinox, giving us a near 50-50 split of day and night.

Here are the things I am excited to share with you and keep you updated on what’s keeping me busy.

I have been attending some conferences to learn and to network with other investors for many years now. At the same time, I’ve volunteered for the inventor of the RentalGauge property management software at a couple of conferences as well. At the Ottawa Real Estate Investors Conference I also met Arlene Dickinson who is nothing like her Television persona, has lived through incredible hardship throughout her life and is incredibly sweet! Recently I was named VP Planning at the Kingston Real Estate Investment Network as I have been netting us our meeting spaces as our club continues to grow, and a couple of fantastic speakers who are nationally well known to the real estates investment world, such as Dave Dubeau and Ross Lightle.

I am also a member of the Durham Real Estate Investment Club Where I attend monthly meetings- leaving Kingston at 3:00p.m. every month, eating in Ajax, attending the meeting, and then networking with other experienced investors over munchies at a pub before hitting the road back to K-Town where we arrive back at 3:00a.m.!

Recently I have taken part in talks with the City of Kingston Council to appeal to them to be gentle on the Airbnb hosts who take in travelers in their homes and have only their home location, as being small business owners, a costly licence and heavy taxing would cut into the earnings of those who may just have a few guests in a season, and in some cases, cause them to have to close their doors.

I have also recently received the drawings for a new legal duplex conversion and will be applying for the building permit to add a secondary suite in the lower level.

Until my next newsletter!

Take care.

The Bottom Line

Real estate is a distinct asset class that is simple to understand and can enhance the risk and return profile of an investor’s portfolio. On its own, real estate offers competitive risk-adjusted returns, with less principal-agent conflict and attractive income streams. It can also enhance a portfolio by lowering volatility through diversification. Though illiquidity can be a concern for some investors, there are ways to gain exposure to real estate yet reduce illiquidity and even bring it on-par with that of traditional asset classes.
